about jennifer boulton

Jennifer Boulton Designs is run by designer maker, Jennie, based in the beautiful Scottish Highlands. All of the products are designed and made by Jennie, who works from a dedicated workshop studio space in her home. Jennie uses a wide variety of inspiration when designing, mainly coming from the natural surrounds she lives in, however, she takes the natural environment and looks into this at a variety of magnifications to inspire her design work. This almost scientific inspiration ensures that the approach to knitwear design is unique resulting in products that are quirky, original and nothing like you would find in mainstream fashion.

background (nostalgia)

Growing up on a hill farm at the foot of Ben Nevis gave me a glimpse into the world of self sufficiency from a very young age. We farmed sheep, cattle, a few pigs, lots of chickens and also grew our own vegetables.
My sister and I would spend long summer days up at the fank, helping with the clipping, dipping and dosing of our flocks of Blackface, Cheviot and Jacobs. We would roll the freshly clipped fleeces, still warm from the sheep with the fresh smell of lanolin in the air, and would be paid 20p per fleece for the privilege!

One childhood memory that I think of most often is watching my mother at her old wooden spinning wheel. Gazing up at her as she carefully and meticulously carded the raw fleece ready for spinning. We would sit in awe of how fast she peddled to make the wheel go round, slightly hypnotised by the spinning motion. Once the wool was spun into yarn, she would hand knit it into clothing for the whole family and our friends too! Ever since I was wee, I was immersed in the world of textiles, knitwear especially, roaming around the farm sporting the latest “In Sheep’s Clothing”, cottage industry jumper. My passion for textiles never faded and I went to study Design for Textiles: Fashion, Interiors and Art at Heriot Watt University in the Scottish Borders after leaving Lochaber High School in 2003. There, I gained an Honours Degree and returned to my hometown of Fort William. There is something about the Highlands that draws you back here; I believe it’s the mountains, as it certainly isn’t the weather!

Jennifer Boulton Designs was established in April 2011, where I have taken all the fundamentals of my mother’s hobby and with a modern twist, I’ve turned it into my business.
